Belly Up show was a hit!

Wow! This past Tuesday we had our launch concert for the tour at the Belly Up Tavern in San Diego and it was amazing! The audience was so full of love and ready to listen and we secretly sold Sharisse’s novel for the first time ever to much buzz and demand! Huge thanks to Kate Vincent for being in charge of the merch. Michael Tiernan for his killer set of original music and then adding so much to my set on guitar, percussion and backing vocals. Charles Ruby on bass and Tim DeMartin on the Machudo cajon for being rocksteady on stage and awesome people to know and hang with in general. The Belly Up staff and sound guys are always so kind and professional and lastly the audience, if you were out there that night, huge hugs and mad love to you for making me feel like I’m saying something that means something. If every show on the tour is a fraction as successful as this one, it would be a good thing!

New Music Video – “CAMEO”

Here’s the new video for “Cameo”! So excited to share. Mad love people!

Everybody has these two things:
1. at least one talent or a passion.
2. a voice in their head doubting that talent or passion.
I wrote “Cameo” as a sort of shut-up to that voice.

We shot this video in one day in North County San Diego with the exception of a few of our friends and fam holding their cards up. Everyone was such a good sport as we were hustling to get this done. Thank you.

SHARISSE COULTER aka The Wife for not only shooting this video and brainstorming the concept with me but adding her input in lyrics. We sat up late one night after chatting about our friend who we adore, who didn’t see how awesome she is and I had a guitar in my hands and this song sort of just formed out of that discussion.
ARIANA HESTER – our gorgeous and amazing friend who stars in this video and yes is actually an aspiring fiction writer. Keeping it real! You were so willing and wonderful to work with. Can’t thank you enough!
The Truymans for letting us use their house. Again. Hugs!
Zel’s Del Mar for letting us crash their wonderful restaurant.
The Saddle Bar, Solana Beach for use of their awesome space.
All the friends who gave up their afternoon to share their smiles and dreams with us in Solana Beach. You’ve all GOT IT GOING ON for sure!
The rest of my friends and fam who agreed to put your dreams and lovely mugs on camera.
I really hope we did you proud.
Mad love!

Things people say to you when you’re on stage #1

“You have the cheekbones that Michael Jackson saw and told the plastic surgeon he wanted. Sorry he can’t be with us.” – Dancing 20-something woman.

The Next Big Thing

Thanks to Jordan Rosenfeld for tagging me in this Q&A literary game.  It’s the kind of thing I’d normally procrastinate doing, but since my novel comes out January 2013, it’s a great exercise in getting me out of my marketing frenzy and back to what matters: the book.  Plus, it gives me an excuse to let people know what it’s about.  The title of this post may be a bit of a pipe dream, but I like to aim high, so why not?

What is the working title of your book?

Rock My World

Where did the idea come from for the book?

I had the idea for a few of the characters in grad school, but after a few failed attempts, realized I didn’t know where to take them.  I abandoned them for quite a few years to help manage my husband’s music career and didn’t give them much thought.  Somewhere in the depths of my sleep-deprived brain (when my son was around a year old) they suddenly resurfaced and told me their stories.  That was my moment of inspiration and I never looked back.

What genre does your book fall under? Contemporary women’s fiction

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

Ooh!  In my dream world, I’d have Jennifer Garner play Jenna, Olivia Wilde play Airika, and Ryan Reynolds as Alex.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

Jenna Jax-Anders–wife of a rockstar, daughter of a rock legend, mother to a teenage daughter–ends up in the middle of a scandal that turns her world upside down, forcing her to do damage control in the celebrity spotlight and learn to redefine herself on her own terms.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

As I said, years ago I had the inkling of a few of the characters, but once the story epiphany hit and I sat down to write, it took about four months to complete the first draft.  I got two hours a day at the library while my husband took our son to the park.  It was a good way to keep myself accountable.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

That’s such a tough question to answer. Tonally, I’d say it’s similar to Emily Giffin’sSomething Borrowed.  With the music angle it probably has most in common with Lauren Weisberger’s Last Night at Chateau Marmont.  And I would love it if the independent female spirit in my book were compared to Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series.

Who or What inspired you to write this book?

Starting with my summer breaks in college, I gravitated to books I could read in one sitting on a beach or plane, that entertained and allowed me to get lost in them.  After a while, however, I found myself frustrated by the girl-finds-and-marries-rich-man-to-live-happily-ever-after storyline.  I wanted to write a story that kept the light tone and page-turning action I loved, but put more weight on the female character’s ability to be her own heroine, in a more realistic depiction of the female experience.  Of course, most people don’t come from Jenna’s celebrity world, but I hope the themes resonate with my readers, as they did with me, writing it.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

I think we all love an insider’s view into the world of celebrity; and music in particular holds a special place of fascination.  I loved building a story around famous people, but instead of focusing on the fame itself, using it as a point of interest to explore  family, friendship, love, betrayal, and of course, Jenna’s search to find herself–something I know I’ve spent more than my fair share on.  And yes, there are elements of the story that mirror my own life, but if you want to find out about those, you’ll want to follow my husband’s and my joint book/music tour (January-June 2013) at

Thanks to Jordan Rosenfeld for tagging me.  I’m excited to read  Stephanie Naman’sEros-Alegra Clarke’s, and Chelsea Starling’s as well, since all of us releasing books at Indie Visible are playing along.

– Sharisse

Finished the Novel! Starting to Book!

Last night, Sharisse and I were up late double checking that there were no holes in the final draft of her novel. And I’m proud and joyed to say that it is finished!!!! AND THAT IT IS AWESOME!!!!

Now it’s time to book the tour!

The goal is to do as many music gig/book signing combos at colleges, bookstores, cafes and house concerts across the country as possible. So, please get in touch if you would like us to stop by and entertain you, share some stories about the making of the book and life on the road. We’re covering as much of the U.S. as possible so don’t hesitate. We’d love to say hi!

If you just want to do a book signing with Sharisse or just do a music show with me, we’re cool with that too. Whatever let’s us share what we do. We’ll be updating this site with dates and info as we get them. So please come back. And once we start the tour in late January, this will be the place to see daily video blogs of our adventures. So excited!

Mad love!
